Our Work in Haiti

ABOUT HAITI

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. 80% of Haitians live in poverty and 62% of the population lives on less than $1.25 each day. Tragically, the 2010 earthquake created an additional 150,000 orphans in a single day. The rampant poverty also negatively impacts the ability of children to attend school, making it difficult for families to break this devastating cycle of poverty. For every 100 children, 40 will never go to school and 55% of the population is illiterate.

We Intervene in 2 Ways

PLACE

Finding Families for Orphans

AGCI has served children and families in Haiti since 2012! Haiti is a Hague accredited country and committed to the adoption process. AGCI is one of a select group of adoption agencies allowed to provide international adoptions in Haiti.

Our first 8 children were recently united with their forever families after 3 years! AGCI has received 9 official referrals through IBESR and in the past 6 months, we have placed 7 children with their forever families, including two sibling groups!

Policy

Changing the System

AGCI is working to observe and assess Haiti’s inter-country adoption process and assist IBSR and the State Department in troubleshooting the gaps within the system. We’re beginning to form a collation of NGOs that are committed to a shared standard of operations and accountability structures within Haiti.

Our goal is to begin changing the way support is given in Haiti by keeping organizations accountable financially.
