Adopt a Child from Burundi



As a Hague country, Burundi has created a stable, pro-adoption environment to help orphans through international adoption. AGCI works directly with the Central Authority in Burundi to place orphans into loving, safe and permanent adoptive homes.   • Available Children for Adoption

    • Orphans ages 2 to 12 years.

    • Children with special needs and sibling groups of all ages are also available.

    AGCI works directly with the Central Authority in Burundi to place orphans in loving, safe, and permanent adoptive homes.

  • Adoption Process for Burundi

    Step 1
    Complete home study and dossier process: approximately 6 months.

    Step 2
    Receive referral and be matched with your child: approximately 6-18 months.

    Step 3
    Complete court process and required 30 day waiting period: approximately 2-3 months.

    Step 4
    Travel to Burundi to meet your child! In Burundi, you’ll also be required to meet with the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Embassy in Kenya: approximately 7-10 days travel.

    Step 5
    AGCI and Burundi require post-adoption visits and reports at 3, 6 and 12 month anniversaries from the U.S. Embassy appointment date. Once the adoption is finalized and your child is home, adoptive parents are required to complete their state re-adoption process and register the adoption with the country Embassy in Washington D.C.


  • Adoption Requirements for Burundi

    Age of Parents
    At least one parent must be age 30 or older. Both parents must be younger than 50 years of age.

    Marital Status
    Couples married at least five years are welcome to adopt. Single women are also eligible to adopt.

    Children in Family
    Families with children are welcome to adopt from Burundi.

    Single Applicant
    Single women may adopt.

    Families must have a positive net worth and an income of at least $10,000 per family member, including the adopted child.

    Criminal History
    Applicants cannot have a criminal history.

    Medical History
    Applicants with a past or current diagnosis of a life-threatening or communicable disease or other condition that impairs their ability to parent and/or the quality of life of a child are ineligible. Applicants with current mental health issues including depression and anxiety are also ineligible.

    Time Frame for Adoption
    The approximate time frame from application through finalization of an adoption is 36 to 48 months.

    Fee Disclosure: All fees paid to AGCI are paid in advance of service. AGCI fees are non refundable and may not be waived. If services are terminated and a refund is due, all refunds will be processed within 60 days of withdrawal and/or closure of the adoption file upon receiving the Adoption Termination Contract.
